Poka-yoke [poka yo-ke] is a Japanese term that means "failsafing" or "mistake-proofing". A poka-yoke is any mechanism in a lean manufacturing process that helps an equipment operator avoid mistakes. Its purpose is to eliminate product defects by preventing, correcting, or drawing attention to human errors as they occur.
CSI has applied the poka-yoke to manufacturing, such as verifying the presence or absence of a feature on a part, like a hole or presence of the thread on a shaft; or determining and recording that a process has successfully completed, such as a bearing has been successfully pressed into place because the press travelled to full stroke or achieved sufficient pressure; or a warehouse operator has successfully completed an order because all the correct barcodes are in the container.
We have provided traceability by recording the poka-yoke process and relating it to the part serial number, carton label, or date and time. This traceability can be used to prove or improve quality, dispel claims of liability, correct manufacturing processes, etc.
